The Changes

When we look back at how the school system were ran when we were in school, we can see a vast amount of changes. We can see today how technology is playing a part in the way the lessons are presented, how education is so focused on testing rather than understanding, as well as government funding others rather than education (which is rather important). I always say, how can teacher's who teach the children of our future be paid average and yet put in a vast amount of time and deal with so many issues? How is it that some schools have a vast amount of technology while others have no technology at all? If we want our students to succeed in this world why are we not giving them each an equal opportunity? Why are we not giving each child an opporunity to strive to be the best they can be? By schools not having the technology we are hindering great educational moments. The school I am currently teaching in is still using over head projectors....you know the ones whose bulbs burn out more than you use them. We do have Elmo's and projectors; however, there are only 2 per grade so between 7 of us we rarely get to use them. We do have computers, but if you want to research something or show a movie you better start the computer up about a half an hour early. They are soooooo slow that it is not even worth using. A school that I used to be at had Smart Boards in each classroom and the latest technology. Can you imagine the learning that takes place in that school? Students are excited and interactive. They want to participate and are always paying attention. Technology is a great way to enhance learning in the classroom! If I had a Smart Board when I was in school I would have raised my hand more rather than trying not to be called on. All I am saying is technology is a great addition to education. Let me know what you think about this issue!

  1. Hi Williams-

This will be a wonderful place for you to practice your writing skills and you have made an excellent start. For this class spelling and grammar are important. You also want to set an excellent example for your students and parents.

You make a number of valid point about the inequities of technology in our schools. How do you think we can make the distribution of technologies more equitable throughout the United States?

  2. Hi,

I am one fo your classmates! I use technology in all of my classes. I even got the system to purchase music oomputers with Finale, Sibelius, Audacity, and Ableton Live for the music kids to work with in our elementary, middle and high schools for both band and chorus. I also use Smartmusic in my instrumental classes as well. Your posts are valid. Be an advocate for technology in your classroom. Talk to your system technology head. If not you, who?

  3. My school sounds like yours! We use PowerPoint daily but it is only projected on the 18" TV in the far corner of the room. It's very hard to see from the opposite corner and therefore for my actual lesson I tend to go to the overhead more just because it projects larger. Is there a push in your school for more technology? If so, I'd be interested to hear what's happening. In our school there was a bunch of money spent last year to upgrade the computer - with new desktops. Our school is the only one in the district that did not have all the computers fully replaced. At this point, any money spent on technology has to come from grants, which no one seems to be writing.

  4. Well our technology is very slowly coming along. I will say that we still have old desktops which load slowly. We do have Elmo’s in a few classrooms but they need to be shared by teachers. This makes it very difficult to start a lesson and finish it with technology, because it is always going from teacher to teacher. I just completed a technology lesson which is required for my portfolio for my school and my technology was power point. I wish I could have allowed the students to use more technology but we just do not have it right now. One teacher in the school wrote a grant and she received a room full of technology. As far as funding from the school board they are more worried about being able to pay the teachers so technology is on the back burner.
