Carrying Out My Game Plan

Resources:
In order to achieve my game plan I am going to need to use a few resources. In order to allow students the ability to use technology in my lessons I will need to create time in the computer lab in order to allow all students the ability to work with a computer. I will also need some feedback from my colleagues on what lessons they may have used that worked well with technology and what lessons did not lend themselves to good technology lessons. I would also like to do some readings on what might be some helpful tips when teaching technology lessons. Since this will be something new to me and my students I would want to make sure that I am giving them the best teaching possible.

Additional Information:
Since working with technology is something both new to myself and my students I would like to give my students a questionnaire on how comfortable the students feel in using the technology. I hear some of my students talking about Facebook and some other Internet websites that they use. But I would like to see how they really feel about using technology in the classroom. If students responses come back that they are uncomfortable with using technology then I will need to make sure I prepare them before I just start a lesson.

Steps So Far:
I have been able to take a look at some of the lessons that I already teach that I could add some technology into. I have also started to create a questionnaire that will help me identify how comfortable the students feel about technology. However there is still a lot more that I need to focus on in order for this Game Plan to be a success!

  1. Taking a pre-assessment on individual attitudes towards technology is an excellent idea. I fell into the trap of just assuming all students wanted to interact with technology. This may not always be the case. Getting a quick peek at how each student feels will better allow you to plan out the rest of the project. Getting students comfortable with using technology is important in order for them to open up and show their creative side.

  2. I agree with Lauren's comments. A pre-assessment would be beneficial on many levels, not just for seeing which students want to use technology, but to assess the level each student feels comfortable at. I also want to make a comment about using a social networking site: Check with your school and see if you are allowed to interact with students through a site like Facebook or Myspace. It is against the rules at our school, and we can face dismissal if we friend students.

  3. I like the idea of doing a questionaire on how much students know about using a computer. It will give you feedback on where your students are and where you need to start off. We must talk with our co-workers to see what works well and share ideas of using technology with lessons.

  4. Isn't it amazing that in this day and age where almost everyone in the professional world has their own computer, we, as educators still have to schedule time in the computer lab for our students. Even the road commision workers in our area and Consumer's Energy repair crew have laptops in their vehicles. If your school is anything like mine, you are trying to share one lab with every teacher. This means you are lucky if you get in there once a month. Not to mention, I teach at an inner-city school where most students do have a computer at home. Therefore, the limited amound of time they get at school, may be their only interaction. In my perfect world, every classroom would be equiped with a computer for every student.

  5. Thanks for all your comments. James as far as communicating with students through facebook or any other social network site it would be very impossible. I cannot even some educational sites at my school that would benefit my students learning. Plus our school board is very strict with facebook. But I do like the idea of having the social network where we as a class could be able to communicate through them for educational purposes!

  6. Perhaps a class blog would add the element of socializing through more academic purposes. You could encourage your principal to add to the blog from time to time, too. This may serve as a reminder that other adults are moderating what is being posted.
