Research Questions

My focus will be the impact of laptop use for student achievement with every student in the classroom having their own laptop.

I will be using the quantitative research method and the following questions will guide me in my research:

-Do students prefer to use laptops to learn rather than using the paper pencil method?

-Is there a difference in student achievement when using technology (i.e laptops) during classroom instruction?

-Does using laptops while learning keep the students motivated and engaged while learning?

Here are a few questions form this weeks discussion that will also guide me in my research:

-What is the best ratio for student to laptop? Is it 1:1?

-What happens to collaboration when each student has a laptop? Increased? Decreased?

  1. Sarah,
I am interested to see if using the laptop will keep the students engaged. I used laptops for end of course review this past year. I had to check them out for a class period. It worked very well for most students but some had trouble staying on task. Overall, I think they enjoyed the change of pace.

  2. Sarah,

It should be interesting to see if laptops should be an integral part of the learning environment. My school has laptops, but they often don't work or don't connect to the internet, so that makes them a little less effective because students (and teacher!) spend much time getting them to work properly which takes away from valuable lesson time! That might be something to look into as well. Are they an efficient use of time?

I love computers and technology in general, but I always like to see the opposite side of the argument about it being too time consuming or distracting. Sometimes, the positives far outweight the negatives, and I think in this case, it's probably true.

    Happy researching!
